Bristol 10k 2013 – 5th May 2013

Race day dawned and I was up at 7am, though I’d had an interrupted night as I kept checking I hadn’t missed either of my alarms. Drove down to Cabot Circus and parked up with a number of other runners and we all ambled down to the Harbourside. The weather was nice and warm and I did a few stretches before making my way to by allotted pen (by race bib colour). There was a big cheer for the wheelchair racer setting off 15 minutes before wave 1 (we saw him later on the Portway and he got another cheer) and a thirty second silence for Boston.

Then wave 1 was off. About four or five minutes after it started my section crossed the start line. It was all a bit crowded and hard to get a clean line and I’m sure if I had been able to get a clearer start I’d have managed an even better time as the stop-start of trying to get through gaps and onto clean road was energy sapping. By the time we got onto the Portway proper there was much more space around everyone, though there were frequent trips up onto the pavement to execute overtaking manoeuvres.

I managed to pick up my pace and pretty much maintain it after the slowish start. I managed to control my breathing and got a drink in just after halfway (though overshot the bin, I didn’t account enough for my speed when throwing). Mind over matter and some deep breaths seemed to help with light stitching. I will also be interested to see what position I crossed the start line in versus what position I crossed the finish line in as it felt like I was passing people more than I was being passed.

The final km was the worst in terms of gradient and road surface. This was the section with all of the cobbles and then a slight incline as you turn with 500m to go. It is then downhill to the finish line though, and I was thrilled to get home sub 50 minutes as I was aiming for 50-55. Thank you to the people lining the route cheering us all on, it can’t have been easy to keep their enthusiasm up for the whole 9,000 or so runners. A week or so off and the training will begin for the Bristol half marathon in September.

Official results: 2,173rd place; chip time: 49 mins 09 secs

4 days to go – final Bristol 10k training run

A nice gentle 8km run along the Avon as my final training run for the Bristol 10km (donations still accepted). The sunny weather and butterflies flitting around managed to keep my pace down to a nice gentle jog. I had lots of time to check for tree roots, small dogs and other trips hazards to minimise my chance of injury before race day. Nothing else for me now except maybe some yoga on Friday just to stretch out any tightness, then it will just be the race (which reminds me, I can now put my timing chip on my shoes without fears of something happening to it).

Ashton Court Parkrun – 27th April

Birthday parkrun today which meant a slightly delayed start due to lots of announcements and prize givings, but my second best time on the hill (less than 10 seconds away from my pb). I even ran in a (tennis) skirt to mark the occasions, but was glad I had a spare pair of gloves in my jacket.

I was 102nd out of 239, 17th lady and 6th in my age group.

11 days to go to the Bristol 10k – 10km training run

I was supposed to go for an easy 9km run today after my body pump class, but as has been established I can’t run at my slow “easy” pace outdoors. So I ran at a slower than flat out pace and when I realised I would be stopping next to slightly creepy looking guy on a quiet path next to a river if I stopped at 9km, I carried on to 10km (with extra uphill). Very pleased to come in under 55 minutes, and I got some practice in at drinking whilst running (though hand bottles are still annoying).

Ashton Court Parkrun – 20th April 2013

It’s been a while since I tackled the Ashton Court hill and after having a week off because I was in Brighton, another because I was ill, and a third because I was at BJC I was curious as to how I’d fare (plus I had to jog to make the start). I was quite pleased to get my second fastest time, maybe the 10k training is paying off at last (the sunshine also helped).

I finished 107th out of 268, was 16th lady and 4th in my age range with an official time of 25:00 exactly – rather pleasing for the 100th Ashton Court parkrun (and my 12th). Two year anniversary of the Ashton Court parkrun next week, and my last before the 10k.

Trouble running slow

The weather has taken a turn for the warmer and after my runs around the BJC site last week I decided to move my paced runs outside. Unfortunately without a treadmill keeping me at a slow pace I can’t seem to stop myself from charging off. Natural barriers of roads and having to open and close gates gave me some pause, but what was supposed to be an easy pace ended up a little bit faster than that (but bodes well for a decent 10km time).

No rest for the wicked

BJC didn’t stop my training for the Bristol 10km in May. Even though I was considerably further North than usual I still managed to squeeze in a 5km before leaving:

a longer 8km when there (didn’t keep it as slow as intended)

and a final 5km on Friday

The next week might not be the full schedule as my body recovers from both a cold and the rigours of the BJC.

Hove Parkrun – 30th March 2013

A new course for my Saturday parkrun this week as I was in Brighton. Run a little differently than Ashton Court (no details about the course or arranging people in speed order, which left the start a bit chaotic) and I was hoping for a better time, but lack of knowledge of the course held me back a bit. I still made it round in under 25 minutes though.

I was 130th out of 345, 16th lady and 2nd in my age category.
