Yesterday didn’t count as I was running around re-stocking the freezer, cleaning the house and driving up to Heathrow and back so today counts as the first day of my semi-retirement.
Got up late (but before midday – I really needed to catch up after a weekend of running around at Knit Nation and Bristol Harbour [...]

Day 1 of new life of leisure/semi-retirement
Losing it
I may finally lose it with the solicitors administering my grandmother’s estate. After threatening them with the Solicitors Regulation Authority it looked like we were making progress when a new solicitor was appointed. Unfortunately there have been more poorly excused delays (when you can get a reply to an e-mail requesting an update) and someone [...]
Prius – one week in
I’ve been living with my prius for a week now and have managed to get through half a tank of fuel (about £23 worth) and do just over 340 miles at an average mpg of 58.5.
Not bad. Taking it for a longish blast down the motorway this weekend so shall have to see how it [...]
Hardening off and planting out
As I’m going to be away for a few days I took the opportunity of British Summer Time to plant out four of the tomato plants that have been hardening off in the greenhouse as well as an aubergine. The tomato plants had been looking a bit sorry for themselves as they’d got a bit [...]
Giving up on helping people
You take the time and effort to try and help people and what happens? They tell you that you’re doing it wrong and that wasn’t their question anyway so not to bother, or they ignore your work and screw it all up themselves.
Green Easter
Having abandoned my veg patch over winter my seeds are coming along nicely (11 tomato plants, 8 aubergines and 20 chilis/peppers so far). The toms are now out in the greenhouse having outgrown the propagators and will soon need to go out in the garden (under cloches initially). In between the showers I have so [...]
Over
My father passed away at about 21:45 last night. It was peaceful. Easter means that the paperwork won’t be ready until Tuesday, so funeral plans are on hold pending the documentation being available.
Sucksville
My sister and I got called into the hospital yesterday afternoon (my sister visits everyday anyway) supposedly to talk with social services about a care plan for my father (how to get him back home and make sure someone is checking on him, etc). Meeting was arranged for 16:00. 16:00 comes and goes as does [...]
Reprieved
Managed to get Social Services to reconsider the whole care home thing and try out regular visits and an alert button.
Anti-social services
It’s funny how you can try and prepare yourself for something only to have those preparations flipped upside down.
At the back of my mind it was always the thought that my father, with his dodgy heart and some-time crazy driving, would be the one to die suddenly, with my mother going into a home and [...]
