A222 – week 3 – The self as a fiction

In the whistle-stop tour of eighteenth century philosophers, this week’s stop was David Hume and his theory that the self is an illusion. Controversial at the time, it seems a lot more obvious now, though the theory is based on ideas coming from impressions and Hume being unable to find an impression of “self” during introspection.
